TREE FOLK
JOSH FLOYD
Josh was born and raised in North Carolina under a towering canopy of trees that he largely took for granted.
Of course, we’re talking about The Pine State. Everywhere you go there are trees. A root between every rock. Pitch and pollen, a tarred heel or two. Trees were prophets in the periphery.
After graduating from college with a writing degree, Josh moved to the largely treeless* landscape of Brooklyn, New York, eventually realizing (of course) just how much he missed them. He found himself taking the train to the state parks and wilderness areas surrounding the city every weekend and even picked up his New York State Guide License and a Wilderness First Responder certification to bring along his fellow city-dwellers.
Eventually a new adventure emerged, and Josh moved west to Oregon where his son Earl could grow up under his own towering canopy of trees. He began working in the tree care industry as a way to stay connected to what he considers to be a reflection of our ecological self and the poetry of place. Our roots, so to speak.
When he’s not working with trees, he can usually be found wandering among them with Earl and his dog Hudson (like that river in New York), or sitting at his writing desk which overlooks a wild, thorny cluster of honey locust.
*although at least one tree grows there
